ENERGY BREAK-OUT CLASSES
During the E4ME summer institute, each day, we took a class on an energy topic of our preference. We learned about things like lighting, and renewable energy types. Here are the summaries of each class, to define what exactly we were doing.
TRANSPORTATION-Students explore different modes of transportation and also learn how transportation choices can affect energy use and impact the environment. Students also use mapping systems and spread sheets to determine cost efficiency of certain ways of shipping and moving.
LIGHTING- Students learned about the different types of lights that are used in different buildings on the facility, and also learned how to use a HOBO Data Logger and a light meter, which determines how many foot-candles a light is using.
(CPR) COMMUNICATIONS AND PUBLIC RELATIONS - The students in the communications and public relations group learn how to use media to communicate a message, the importance of public speaking in order to voice our message, and how to use documentaries to persuade.
RENEWABLES- Students learned about renewable and non-renewable energy sources. They learned how to use the Solar Pathfinder, which shows you what might be the best spot to put solar panels and the percentage of sunlight you will get in that area in different months.
HEATING AND COOLING- Students were trained how to check a building's overall efficiency by seeing if any air is getting in through gaps in the building's envelope and how they could fix it. They also learned about Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVACs) and British Thermal Units (BTUs).
APPLIANCES-Students investigated plug-load (electricity use) by using the information on electronic nameplates, as well as tools like a Kill-A-Watt meter. Our overall goal is to reduce electricity use to save money.
